Smart Locks for Commercial Premises

Staff, members, or guests each get their own access credential instead of a shared key that's impossible to track once it's been copied a few times. When someone leaves the team, their access is revoked instantly — no re-keying the whole building. For sites with shift patterns or member access outside staffed hours, codes can be restricted to specific time windows.

Most small commercial sites run on a handful of keys that have been in circulation for years. Somebody cut a spare for a contractor in 2022. A member of staff who left in spring never handed theirs back and nobody chased it. The cleaner has one. The answer to 'how many keys to this building exist?' is almost always 'more than we think'.

That's tolerable right up until it isn't — a dismissal that doesn't end well, a theft with no way to narrow down who had access, or an insurer asking how entry is controlled. At that point the only real remedy is re-keying every door, which costs real money and has to be repeated the next time.

Offices — staff access on working hours, with a smaller group holding out-of-hours rights. Cleaners on their own evening window. Contractors issued access for the day they're attending.

Gyms and studios — the usual driver is member access outside staffed hours without putting a person on the door. Membership status and access are kept in step, so a lapsed member stops getting in.

Hostels and serviced accommodation — per-stay codes on rooms and the main entrance, expiring at check-out. Effectively the short-let model at building scale.

Storage, workshops and yards — usually a small number of doors where the priority is knowing who opened what and when, rather than convenience.

Worth saying plainly: any door on an escape route must let people out freely without a key, code, or anything else. That's a fire safety requirement and it's not negotiable, regardless of what's fitted on the outside.

In practice this rarely causes a problem — smart locks control entry, and the inside handle continues to open the door as normal. But if your site has specific fire strategy requirements, or doors that are part of a certified escape route, tell us at survey and we'll work around them. Where a door falls outside what we should be touching, we'll say so rather than fit something and hope.

• Admin rights set up for whoever manages the site, with more than one person able to grant access so you're not dependent on one individual
• Handover so whoever manages the site day-to-day can add/remove access themselves

The standard lock app handles most commercial sites perfectly well.
