Case Study: A Master Bedroom That Opens Only On Request
Not every smart lock job is a rental. Michael Lucas, a homeowner in Manchester, wanted one internal door secured: the master bedroom. The requirement was specific — his children shouldn't be able to get in unless he'd authorised it, and he wanted to be able to grant that access and take it back without a conversation about keys.
The brief
A standard bedroom lock gives you exactly one tool: a key. Which means it gives you exactly one set of problems.
- Keys get left in the door, in a drawer, or on a hook — and children work out where they live faster than anyone expects.
- Handing someone a key is permanent. There's no such thing as lending it for an afternoon unless you ask for it back and trust that it wasn't copied.
- You have no idea whether the door was opened while you were out, or by whom.
Michael didn't want a more secure key. He wanted access to be something he grants and withdraws, rather than an object that exists in the house whether he likes it or not.
What was fitted
A TTLock-platform smart lock on the master bedroom door. Internal doors are a straightforward fit — it's battery-powered, so there's no wiring, no electrician, and no mains supply needed at the door.
The lock supports fingerprint, PIN, card and a mechanical key override, which is what makes it possible to give different people different kinds of access to the same door.
How it solved the problem
Fingerprints for the adults. This is the part that does the real work. A fingerprint can't be left in a drawer, found under a mattress, borrowed for ten minutes, or copied at a key cutter. Only the enrolled fingers open the door, and enrolling or removing one takes seconds.
Temporary codes when access is actually granted. When Michael does want someone in the room — a family member fetching something, a cleaner, a tradesperson — he issues a passcode that works for a set window and then stops. Nothing to collect afterwards, and nothing left in circulation that he has to remember to cancel.
Remote unlock and revocation. With a gateway fitted, the door can be opened from the phone, and any code or fingerprint can be removed instantly from anywhere. Authorisation genuinely becomes a decision rather than a physical handover.
An access log. The app records each opening and which credential was used. For a door whose entire purpose is controlled access, knowing it stayed shut is as useful as being able to open it.
It isn't only about the children
The brief was about the kids, but a lockable master bedroom does more than that once it's there. It's where most households keep passports and documents, medication that shouldn't be reachable, jewellery, and anything else worth having behind a door when trades, guests or cleaners are in the house.
It's also worth checking your own home insurance wording — some policies treat valuables kept in a secured room differently from ones left in an open one.
The result
One internal door that the adults of the house open without thinking about it, that the children can't, and that anyone else can be let through only for as long as Michael decides. No keys in the house to find, and none to ask for back.
